Additional History

Our Webhoster shares that over half of our visitors make us a BookmarkFavorite. Holy Cow!!! Thanks.

We wanted to fill this need and be creative at the same time. This idea started back in the 1980's. We often wondered about trick or treating families waiting at doors where nobody answered. I didn't like it as a kid and sure is sure, history is pretty repetitive. I personally thought of dozens of different signs that could be used to convey the homeowner's Halloween candy-treating intentions. It wasn't just a unique concept, but highly theftable. Unfortunately, I've already seen a really fun holiday-based product of mine get pilfered. When you are giving something away for free and quantities wind up being sold by someone else, that hurts. Intellectual property rights now help. And the Internet eventually addresses the immediate "distribution chain issues" not available back in the 1980's or 1990's.

This idea doesn't work well unless we address both the Candy and NoCandy homeowners.

The matching Candy sign makes the NoCandy sign more comfortable to use.

The Oprah Effect. It truely was an Oprah Halloween show some years ago about Halloween that really sparked the more recent re-focusing. It gave us a kick in the pants to move it forward. We were able to get all kinds of design idea help by asking everyone via email. There were some good tries, but oh so many rotten, crazy or wild concepts. Sometimes, you'd wonder if or hope they were trying to be funny. The better designs were voted upon by the same folks that we asked to help us. The winners morphed into what you can download and print out for free today. It was important to have everyone agree on the winning designs. It was all part of the fun of it. We also legally protected all of the designs, just in case. You can understand how nowadays, for us, that really became a huge part of this concept rollout.

This website and the concept are so simple. We learned from the best Search Engine to "always" keep it simple and give it away for free. It's hard to believe that there could be so many issues needing to be ironed out prior to a launch date. We parked the www.HalloweenSign.com (TrickorTreatSign.com works) site name for years while we were trying to figure out all the ins and outs. We eventually decided to handle the site design, hosting and surrounding issues in-house. There are so many nice folks with professional abilities that wanted to contribute their help. Karma. So, the site was finally launched a few weeks before Halloween 2009. With just a local presence (local government help and cable access TV), we got about 6000 hits in four weeks. That's not as good as we dreamed, however it's a good start. After our 5th year, it should be very popular.. hopefully Nationwide.

We have been piggybacking with local municipalities to help them incorporate our sign into something they could work with. The idea was to let them have free sponsorship - advertising for themselves. We are building templates for them.
